Research & current projects

My research focuses on the rule of law, institutions, and the politics of postcommunism. My dissertation examined the relationship between political competition and judicial independence, conditional on the democratic or non-democratic nature of the regime. I am currently working on a manuscript on the relationship between de jure and de facto judicial independence, drawing on signifciant field work in Hungary.

Beyond the study of judicial independence, I have on-going projects examining popular support for legal institutions, how political institutions affect state leaders, and communist legacies in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
