March 14, 2012: Unveiling Colonialism in the Republic.

An inter-disciplinary workshop to discuss the contemporary controversy of the veil in France.

In this workshop, speakers bring critical historical approaches to analyzing Republicanism and race. Analyses of the contemporary cases focus on the genealogy of laïcité and trace processes of racialization, with attention to the political dimensions associated with both of the previous features.

A final panel extends the discussion to cases of politicized religion in Europe and the U.S.
