EUI Working Paper, Max Weber Programme.
This article examines how institutional change affects age-based labour market inequalities amongst male prime-aged workers in Europe. Age-graded inequalities within this group are hitherto underresearched.
We focus on the impact of employment protection and regulation as well as of wage setting institutions. We estimate country panel regressions using data from the European Union Labour Force Survey from 1992-2007 as well as time-series data on institutional change. The results present evidence that employment protection and the deregulation of temporary work significantly affect age-based inequality dynamics. Union strength, by contrast, has positive employment effects across all age groups.
