Which religious history for the (two) early modern Netherlands before 1648? Questions, Trends and Perspectives.

ABSTRACT:
With the grand narrative of the Dutch Revolt and the Eighty Years War having been fundamentally rewritten within the last few decades, this review essay examines religious history from this very same era and considers whether the work in this field has followed suit. It first discusses the current conceptualisations of the (two) ‘Netherlands’, contrasting them in a second paragraph with the emergence of separate Dutch and Belgian national narratives on early modern religion. A third paragraph shows how most of the classic readings of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation have been deconstructed through a continuous comparison of ‘North’ and ‘South’ since the 1960s. A fourth and last section then argues that the current ‘de-centering’ is gradually remapping the religious geography and historiography of the (two) early modern Netherlands before 1648.

Le récit de la révolte aux anciens Pays-Bas et de la guerre de quatre-vingts ans ayant été fondamentalement réécrit au cours des dernières décennies, cette étude historiographique examine l’histoire religieuse de cette même époque et s’interroge sur la conformité du travail effectué dans ce domaine. Il traite d’abord des conceptualisations actuelles des (deux) « Pays-Bas », les opposant dans une deuxième partie à l’émergence de récits nationaux néerlandais et belges distincts sur la religion du début de l’époque moderne. Une troisième partie montre comment la plupart des lectures classiques de la Réforme et de la Contre-Réforme ont été déconstruites par une comparaison continue du « Nord » et du « Sud » à partir des années 1960. Une quatrième et dernière partie soutient alors que l’actuel « décentrage » redessine graduellement la géographie et l’historiographie religieuses des (deux) Pays-Bas prémodernes avant 1648.
Abstrakt:
Die großen Linien des Niederländischen Aufstands und des 80-jährige Krieges wurden in den letzten Jahrzehnten von Grund auf neubewertet. In diesem Aufsatz wird die Religionsgeschichte derselben Epoche untersucht und geprüft, ob Forschungen in diesem Bereich dementsprechend nachgezogen sind. Zuerst werden die aktuellen Konzeptualisierungen der (zwei) „Niederlande“ diskutiert und im zweiten Absatz der Entstehung einer separaten niederländischen und belgischen nationalen Erzählperspektive der frühen modernen Religion gegenübergestellt. Der dritte Absatz zeigt auf, dass die meisten klassischen Lesungen der Reformation und Gegenreformation seit den 1960er Jahren von einem kontinuierlichen Rückgriff auf den „Nord/Süd“-Vergleich bestimmt wurden. Der vierte und letzte Abschnitt argumentiert, dass die heutige „Dezentrierung“ die religiöse Geographie und Historiographie der (zwei) frühmodernen Niederlande vor 1648 schrittweise neu zeichnet.
