The Institutionalisation of New Parties in Europe: (How) Does it matter for Success? In Harmel, R. Svasand, L. and Mjelde, H. The Institutionalization and De-Institutionalization of Parties: Comparative Cases, ECPR Press, Forthcoming; Chapter 3.
In this chapter, Lefkofridi and Weissenbach compare the experiences toward institutionalisation of three Greek parties: SYRIZA, To Potami, and ANEL. The authors argue that a party’s roots (whether formed from a split or a merger or completely new) may affect its institutionalisation, and that institutionalisation may affect the party’s success in gaining parliamentary representation. Findings from the limited comparison generally support those expectations.
