Abstract: This article develops in-depth the ambivalence between dissent and peacemaking on the Eve of the Revolt from the nobles’ perspective. I argue that peacemaking embraced more than the expression of the moderate religious and political views, as previously analyzed by Juliaan Woltjer. Concrete peacemaking aimed at reconciling the different stances and finding coalitions on concrete proposals during organised crisis meetings. Every suggestion for reconciliation was discussed on a larger platform, which was not part of day to day Brussels policy-making. The overall moderate stance on persecution of heretics - as described by Woltjer - was translated to different plans and these proved to be the real apple of discord. Yet under all circumstances, the bargaining base in the religious sphere was considerably narrower than in France.
